Tambopata National Reserve Tour (3 Days)

Experience the best of Peru’s Tambopata National Reserve on this brief three-day tour with a local English-speaking guide. The journey begins with a transfer from the airport or bus terminal in Puerto Maldonado.

This three-day tour of Peru’s Tambopata National Reserve is ideal for those looking to gain an overview of life in the natural reserve.

Tambopata, nestled in Peru’s Madre de Dios province, is named after the renowned Tambopata River. Originating from Lake Titicaca, it branches into the Amazon rainforest.

Tambopata is rich in biodiversity. This region of the Amazon rainforest is home to over 650 bird species such as the harpy eagle and 1500 varieties of butterflies, most of which are unique to the region. Tambopata also hosts over eight species of macaws, including the iconic scarlet macaws.

The Tambopata National Reserve is famous for its cochas and macaw clay licks. The Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick in Tambopata is the largest in the world.

Join us as a solo traveler, couple, or group to gain insight into life in the Peruvian Amazon jungle.

It is highly recommended to visit the Tambopata National Reserve during the dry season, between March and November. During the rainy season (December to February), you will rarely have the chance to see any animals.

DAY 1: PUERTO MALDONADO – AMAZON JUNGLE RETREAT (TAMBOPATA)

At 8:00 AM, we will transfer you to the boat dock in Puerto Acosta. Here, you will board the motorized boat for your 30-minute journey along the Madre de Dios River to our exclusive Amazon Jungle Retreat.

Our team will assist you with the check-in process. After a brief rest here, we will embark on our tour of the Tambopata National Reserve.

CANOPY WALK: We will begin with a short walk of 200 meters from our lodge to the Canopy Tower. It stands 35 meters tall and is built at the base of a huge Lupuna Tree, representing the Amazon for its immense size.

Throughout the day, you’ll have the opportunity to observe various bird species here. Our local expert will provide detailed explanations about the flora and fauna of the area.

ZIP-LINING: Once you’ve explored the canopy walk, we’ll zip-line through the forest. Our local instructor will provide safety tips and share information on how to make the most of this activity. Ready, you’ll glide along the 190-meter zip line.

One of our monitors will meet you and help you cross a small 100m bridge. Then, you’ll return to the starting point via zip line.

After this thrilling experience, we’ll return to the lodge for lunch. Our team will serve you an authentic Amazonian meal. After lunch, you’ll have time to relax in the hammocks at our lodge.

KAYAKING: In the early afternoon, we’ll embark on a kayaking adventure. We’ll take the kayaks from our lodge, and our team will help you with all the safety equipment.

Once everything is ready, we’ll start the experience. A safety boat will follow you to ensure all travelers manage well.

Then, you’ll have the chance to cool off from the Amazon heat by taking a dip in the cool waters of the Madre de Dios River.

MONKEY ISLAND: After enjoying kayaking, we’ll return to our boat for a 15-minute downstream trip to Monkey Island. As the name suggests, the island is home to different species of monkeys.

You’ll see a group of capuchin monkeys, black monkeys (Cebus apella), white monkeys (Cebus albifrons), among others. Most of these breeds are friendlier in nature. Accompanied by a local expert, you’ll be able to approach them and feed them while observing their coexistence in the Tambopata National Reserve.

After this experience, we’ll return to the lodge at 4:30 PM. You’ll be able to witness the sunset in the Amazon here.

CAIMAN SPOTTING: After sunset, we’ll embark on a well-equipped boat ride with spotlights and headlights to spot caimans. The lights radiating from their eyes will make it easier for you to spot them at night.

You’ll be able to see white caimans and dwarf caimans here.

At 7:30 PM, we’ll return to the lodge for dinner and a well-deserved rest.

DAY 2: SANDOVAL LAKE - NIGHT HIKE

You will awaken to the melodious songs of birds. Our team will serve you a delightful Amazonian breakfast, including freshly squeezed fruit juice, a cup of freshly brewed Peruvian coffee, eggs, pancakes, fried bananas, and more.

At 09:30 a.m., we will board the boat and cross the river to reach the checkpoint. Here, the details of each visitor will be recorded by local authorities. Then, we will embark on a one-hour hike covering three kilometers to reach Sandoval Lake.

During the hike, you will have the opportunity to observe various varieties of flora and fauna. You may also encounter giant otters among other mammals and animals here.

Once at the shores of Sandoval Lake, a delicious lunch will be served amidst the jungle. We will then take a rowing boat and navigate to the center of the lake to observe more birds and mammals.

The region is home to hoatzins, cormorants, and anhingas. Occasionally, travelers have spotted the iconic “Playful River Otters.” After gaining an immersive insight into life at Sandoval Lake, we will return to the lodge.

Around 06:30 p.m., we will embark on a hike to spot more varieties of nocturnal creatures. Our guide will provide detailed explanations about them.

Around 07:30 p.m., we will return to the lodge for dinner.

DAY 3: NATIVE FAMILY VISIT - SPORT FISHING - TRANSFER TO TAMBOPATA

We will awaken you with an Amazonian breakfast. Around 08:00 a.m., we will embark on a hike to a native community to firsthand experience their way of life. We will be visiting an indigenous family of ancient warriors and hunters. You will witness their ancestral traditions and customs.

They are renowned for their paintings. If you wish, you can purchase one of them.

After visiting the native family, we will board a boat ride to a stream where we will engage in countryside fishing. The lake is home to different types of fish, such as catfish, maidens, sardines, or piranhas.

We will bring the fish back to the lodge, and our chef will cook them with traditional spices for lunch.

After lunch, we will transfer you back to Tambopata for your return flight or bus.
