SANDOVAL LAKE
At 8:00 AM, we’ll begin our journey aboard a boat, navigating the Madre de Dios River for approximately 40 minutes until we reach the entrance of Sandoval Lake. After disembarking, a brief walk will lead us to the Lake Sandoval Control Post, where we’ll register and present our entrance tickets as the lake resides within the Tambopata National Reserve. Continuing on, we’ll embark on a 3-kilometer hike, estimated to take around 45 minutes.
During this trek, you’ll have the opportunity to encounter a diverse array of flora and fauna, including birds, monkeys, rodents, arachnids, insects, reptiles, and amphibians. Upon reaching the lake’s shores, you can enjoy a refreshing dip in its pristine waters before indulging in a delectable jungle lunch. Later, we’ll embark on a rowing boat excursion, searching for bird species such as hoatzines, cormorants, anhingas, and with luck, the playful River Otters, a highlight of Lake Sandoval.
In the afternoon, at a time coordinated with your guide, we’ll return to the Madre de Dios Riverbank, where our boat awaits to ferry us back to ECO LODGE RETREAT.
An optional night walk is available for those interested.
Conclude the day with a satisfying dinner and restful overnight stay.
We will begin at 8:30 in the morning from our Tambopata Inn lodge. We’ll embark on a 2-hour tour, spending the first hour on the interoceanic highway and then traveling along a lightly trafficked road to reach the Tambopata River banks. Here, our boat and driver will await us to journey by river for about 30 minutes upstream until we reach our lodge. Along the way, there are opportunities to spot numerous riverside birds, capybaras, and white caimans. Upon arrival at the lodge, a welcome drink and a brief overview of our services will be provided. After settling in, guests can explore the surroundings for a better understanding of the area. Following lunch, there will be a short break before continuing with a walk through a primary forest abundant with thousand-year-old trees. This excursion offers insights into key economic activities in our region such as agriculture, mining, logging, nut collection, and ecotourism, while also providing opportunities to observe monkeys and other mammals in their natural habitat.
As dusk approaches, we’ll return to the lodge, equipped with flashlights to observe alligators, capybaras, and perhaps some nocturnal felines near the river. After dinner, for those still eager, a short night walk can be arranged to search for insects, arachnids, tarantulas, and potentially spot snakes, armadillos, night monkeys, or tapirs near the lodge.
We’ll rise early, greeted by the promise of a new day, and set off upstream at 5:00 am, just as the sun begins to cast its golden rays upon the landscape. As we navigate the tranquil waters, we’ll be treated to breathtaking views, with a slim chance of encountering the elusive jaguar or majestic anaconda along the shores of the Tambopata National Reserve.
Upon reaching our destination, a vibrant spectacle awaits us as parrots and macaws fill the air with their colorful plumage and lively chatter. Here, we’ll witness firsthand why these birds, alongside many other mammals, rely on the clay of this wall for their daily nourishment. This captivating display will captivate us from 6:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., followed by a delightful breakfast overlooking the Collpa Chuncho.
After concluding our activities, a brief visit to the checkpoint and a small museum will offer further insights into the region’s rich biodiversity. Following lunch at our hostel, we’ll enjoy a well-deserved break before embarking on an excursion to the refreshing waters of Quebrada el Gato waterfall. Here, amidst the pristine beauty of Madre de Dios, we’ll indulge in a rejuvenating bath and learn about the diverse array of products cultivated in this fertile land.
As the afternoon wanes, we’ll journey downstream by canoe for 20 minutes before boarding a truck for the two-hour return trip to Puerto Maldonado, filled with memories of our unforgettable adventures in Tambopata.
